For the project ‘Beyond the Veil’ by Afghan street artist Malina Suliman, I filmed in Amsterdam and edited the footage for a display at the ‘Art Represent’ gallery in London. A second display featured footage from Kabul, which I edited similarly. Through these displays, Malina aimed to highlight the contrast between the Middle East and the West in reactions to women wearing a Burka.

Malina Suliman, born in Kandahar in 1990, is one of the few female artists emerging from war-torn Afghanistan. After studying Fine Art in Pakistan, she was inspired by the potential of street art. Her work, including the iconic skeletal figure in a blue burka, garnered global attention, emphasizing identity, inequality, and oppression in Afghanistan.

The footage from Amsterdam and Kabul was also used by BBC, CNN, and Channel 4 for short portraits of her.
